Fifth string power chords are easiest ways to get the sound of a chord without complex finger positions. Playing the B chord on guitar using a 5th string power chord is the simplest way to play a B Chord.
We can find the B root note on the second fret of the fifth string, otherwise known as the open A string. See if you can find it yourself first. If not just move up to the first fret and you get A#, and the next one along is the B. So, we use the second fret of the A string.
Lucky for us we will only be using our 1st finger (index) to hold down the B note on the 2nd fret, although for good practice I want you to use your 1st finger to create a bar that runs from the B note all the way down to the bottom string, this will help when learning barre chords in later lessons.
Now we strum the bar to ensure the B note is played cleanly. The best place for your fingers when fretting any note is to be as close to the actual fret (metal bar) as is possible. Look at your index finger and make sure it's pushed up as close to the fret as you can for the best tone.
You'll only need to increase the force applied to the note if you get a buzzing sound, failing that try move your index finger closer to the fret bar. Changes like these should give you a clearer tone and will help for that note to sound clean.
Adding the fifth note and the octave to this B power chord gives us a rich sounding chord. The fifth note in the B Major Scale is an F#, remember the B Major scale goes B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A#, B. We want to play the F# on the 3rd string from the top which is the D String. The B octave is found one string below the F#, still on the 4th fret.
Now we need to find a way to fret the F# on the D string, and B octave on the G string. One way is to use your 3rd and 4th fingers to fret the strings individually. Since your ring finger- 3rd- is likely to be stronger than your pinky use this to fret the D string, and the pinky for the G string. As above try to get your fingers as close to the metal fret bar so you get the best tone for this B Chord.
If this method proves immediately fatiguing, try barring the other two notes with either the ring or the pinky finger. The ring finger is stronger but requires more stretching. It does allow for one to trill one fret above the 4th fret which is a common motif in rock music.
